WHY BUY lOCAL

"Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.” (Shuman 2000)

Buying or eating locally grown products means the food on your plate hasn't traveled 300 miles to reach you. Buying local food means you get a product that is fresher, healthier, and tastier than one that has spent days in transit, packaging, and storage. You'll find fresher food at farmer's markets and local shops than in large retail outlets.

The farmers have to pick produce early for transport to faraway retailers before it is ripe. A local food seller, on the other hand, can harvest their produce at the right time, resulting in a better taste. Think beyond fresh fruits and vegetables! Handcrafted spirits, cheeses, eggs, and meats are available locally.

The quality of a product goes beyond its taste. Locally grown foods offer superior nutrition as well. Food loses nutrients when it is stored or transported. By the time it reaches you, it is unlikely to have the same health benefits. Buy locally if you want to improve your diet and satisfy your taste buds.

And buying local goes beyond food - our farms produce animal feeds such as grains, hay, and pet foods plus plants for your garden and landscape, fresh flowers for your table, and even wool products to keep you warm in winter.
